Frequently Asked Global Harmonized System Q&A
What is the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS)?
The GHS is a single, globally harmonized system of classification of chemicals, labels and safety data sheets. The GHS was developed by the United Nations and is being progressively implemented in many countries internationally.
What is the difference between an MSDS and an SDS?
In an SDS, information on the chemical hazards is based on the GHS classification, rather than the hazardous substances and dangerous goods classifications. Both provide equivalent levels of information on chemical hazards and health and safety precautions, and either is able to be used in the workplace to meet requirements for managing risks. Under GHS, an SDS is required as of June 1st 2015.
When will SDSs be available from AIM?
SDSs under the GHS format will gradually be made available as of May 15th 2015. Some product lines may start shipping with SDSs as of May 1st 2015.
Do I need new labels under GHS?
As of December 1st 2015, the Distributor shall not ship containers labeled by the chemical manufacturer or importer unless it is a GHS label. As of June 1st 2016, employers need to update alternative workplace labeling and hazard communication program as necessary, and provide additional employee training for newly identified physical or health hazards.
When will AIM products be distributed with labels reflecting the GHS format?
Some product lines may start shipping with new labels as of May 15th 2015. Other product lines will be changed by May 30th 2015.
Can I obtain new GHS labels to change my existing labels?
Yes, you may contact customer service as of May 30th 2015 if you need GHS labels to replace existing labels. Simply specify how many labels are required, and for which product format.
